PORTABLE OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR!!!?

Posted on April 7th, 2010 by admin

Hi there!!!

does any of you guys have idea about the INOGEN. what advantage does it have over the portable canister? please let me know , thanks and happy new year !!! 2009

This is a big advance for patients that need continous oxygen. The concentrator works off a battery and lasts up to eight hours. Don’t know how lightweight it is but looks to be under 10 lbs. Not bad for something that normally weighs in at 75-80 lbs.
Also if your waiting in an office you can just plug it in and save the battery.
Best thing to come along for a long time.

dr says my oxy satuation is low-on oxygen concentrator – dr says not sleep apnea- doesn’t know why-any idea?

Is your concentration low only when you sleep or also when awake? Did they do a sleep study on you to rule out sleep apnea? If it is only when you sleep, elevating the head of your bed may help. It allows for more expansion of your diaphragm for easier breathing. Could be some kind of respiratory or heart ailment. Could be shallow breathing while sleeping which is different from sleep apnea. Hope they find a diagnosis for you.

how to service oxygen concentrator?

Posted on April 3rd, 2010 by admin

I’m on 24/7 oxygen with the oxygen concentrator. I rent if from a local service. This service sends out a fellow to made sure the concentrator is working correctly, that the oxygen is really what the dial indicates, changes my filters, and generally checks this out. If you need one in your home, be sure to contact your power provider as PG&E in CA lets you have a better rate for electricity when you have this prescribed.
The power provider may put your home on a list, as well, meaning that your home would get the power back on even faster than most homes.

How can I bill Medicare for a portable oxygen concentrator?

Posted on March 30th, 2010 by admin

I rented a portable oxygen concentrator for use while travelling and the medical supply company required payment by credit card bc they said that Medicare would not pay them for this item. I have a supplemental insurance that will pay for things not paid for by Medicare. OK, I know that no insurance company guarantees payment but I want to make a serious effort to be reimbursed for this item. Any suggestions you might have will be appreciated., I have worked in medical billing, but my experience is with billing for a medical doctor’s office, not for medical supplies. Thanks.

I do not believe that you will be reimbursed, and although I don’t have all of the information here’s why I say that.

An oxygen concentrator IS a Medicare approved item. This means that Medicare WILL PAY for the rental of this item. However, you must get this item through a Medicare approved supplier; Medicare will not pay for services, equipment or supplies not received through an approved provider. If Medicare will not pay in most cases neither will the Supplement. The business must have a contract with Medicare. Businesses that do have a contract must provide you, in writing, an ABN form which explains what items and services that Medicare will not pay for and why. From what you stated that the company rep said, and since you didn’t mention this form, I do not believe the supply company is a Medicare approved business and therefore neither Medicare nor the Supplement will pay.

Secondly, in most cases a supplement does not pay for things not paid for by Medicare. Instead, a Supplement pays your share of the cost of Medicare approved procedures, equipment, and supplies. For example, if the concentrator cost $100 Medicare would pay $80 and the Supplement would pay your share of $20. You do not need to get approval from Medicare nor the Supplement. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, which works completely different from a Medicare Supplement, you may need to get approval prior to the rental but again the supplier must be contracted with Medicare before you’ll get reimbursed. Also, even with an Advantage plan durable medical equipment is not covered if it is not a Medicare approved item.

Anyone who has used a portable oxygen concentrator…?

Posted on March 28th, 2010 by admin

I would like to hear comments/critiques of portable oxygen concentrator from anyone who has used them. I do know all about portable oxygen tanks… I also know that we can NEVER get the company that provides them to my mother to ever show up and bring her more. (She’s on a HMO policy, so we can’t change from the provider. BTW: Beware of Apria!). I know insurance will not pay for the concentrator, so I will have to pay for this for her out of my pocket. I just need some recommendations from anyone who has experienced a portable oxygen concentrator for themselves (or vicariously through a loved one).
Thank you in advance to all who respond!

I have used the Inogen One portable oxygen concentrator a few times and liked it very much. I don’t own it (I can rent it through my oxygen supply company), but I would if I have the extra money. One thing to keep in mind, this concentrator has a 5 liter per minute max (most of the portables do also from what I’ve seen).
I’m sorry to hear of the problems you mom is having with the company that provides her oxygen! Has she or you (or her doctor) complained to your insurance company? Sometimes that helps or they will allow her to go through another company. Good luck
