“Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy May Help Autism In The Uk

In the latest study, carried out at six centres in the US, 62 children aged two to seven with autism were randomly assigned to receive 40 hours of treatment over a month with 24% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure (1.3 atm) or normal air in a slightly pressurised room (1.03 atm).

Children who received the treatment showed significant improvements in overall functioning, receptive language, social interaction, eye contact, and sensory or cognitive awareness.

In all, 30% in the treatment group were rated by doctors as “”very much improved”" or “”much improved”" compared with 8% of those in the control group.

Overall, 80% in the treatment group improved compared with 38% of controls.

“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy & Chambers are used in conventional treatment for decompression sickness; severe carbon monoxide poisoning; certain kinds of wounds, injuries, and skin infections; delayed radiation injury; and certain bone or brain infections.

Decompression sickness, commonly known as “”the bends,”" is an extremely painful and potentially dangerous condition that strikes scuba divers who surface too quickly and, occasionally, miners and tunnel builders who come up too rapidly. It can also affect fighter pilots who climb very quickly.

Claims about alternative uses of HBOT include that it destroys disease-causing microorganisms, cures cancer, alleviates chronic fatigue syndrome, and decreases allergy symptoms.

A few supporters also claim that HBOT helps patients with AIDS, arthritis, sports injuries, multiple sclerosis, autism, stroke, cerebral palsy, senility, cirrhosis, Lyme disease, and gastrointestinal ulcers. Available scientific evidence does not support these claims.

Because of that, the FDA has sent a warning letter to at least one manufacturer about promoting HBOT for unproven uses. The FDA considers oxygen to be a drug, meaning it must be prescribed by a physician or licensed health care provider to treat illnesses or health conditions.

Portable Hyperbaric chambers, which are used for home treatment. These are usually referred to as “”mild hyperbaric chambers”", which is a reference to the lower pressure of soft-sided chambers. Those commercially available in the USA go up to 4.1 PSI which is equivalent to a water depth of 11 ft. These chambers are operated with oxygen concentrators or with 100% oxygen as the breathing gas.
These portable hyperbaric chambers were originally developed and used for altitude sickness.

My neighbor just qualified due to low O2 sats in the 80’s. He has a large concentrator for the house and then he got 2 portable tanks for when he goes out of the house. How else would he be able to keep doctor’s appointments if he didn’t have portable oxygen.

Hyperbaric therapy is highly recommened for a family with a child with autism to try at least 50 -100 sessions to see what kind of benefits your child can derive from them. It can be effective to first see in a hard chamber if you can move forward with it. But most of the time for most it is not cost effective and home soft chambers are highly effective and much cheaper over time.

Hard chambers that use oxygen infused into the chamber instead of through a oxygen mask can actually be dangerous. that goes for soft chambers that do not use a mask to distribute the oxygen. Either way it is highly recommended to give this therapy a try in order to see if you can improve the quality of your
childs life.
