Because you can pass out in seconds from lack of oxygen. Even if your child, or whoever you are with, passes out they are still alive and breathing, and will still breathe the o2 even if you put it on them soon after the person passes out.

Because if you try putting your child's on first, you will pass out during putting on your child's mask. And the child might be helpless, not knowing how to put the mask on the parent. Where as, if you put your own oxygen mask on first, and your child passes out, you will be safe, and can then put the child's oxygen mask on them and they'll regain consciouseness in a few seconds.

After a few seconds without the mask, a person will go unconscious and won’t be able to assist anyone at all. Despite being unconscious, the person is not dead. Assisting yourself while conscious is the best thing to do, so you are able to help your fellow passenger. If you assist your neighbor first, they might not be able to help you once you are unconscious.

Cabin pressure change won’t kill anyone… and nobody is going to die because of cabin pressure change.

The reason is simple: at high altitudes, if the cabin loses pressurization, you will lose consciousness in a few seconds without oxygen. If you try to put your child’s oxygen mask on before you put on your own, you’ll pass out, and then both you and your child will suffer oxygen deprivation (and perhaps even brain damage). Therefore you must put your mask on first, so that you don’t pass out, and then you can put your child’s mask on. Your child may pass out before you get his mask on, but the few seconds of unconsciousness while you put on his mask won’t do him any harm.

Many parents become irrational about their children in emergencies, and they will rush to "save" their child by putting on his mask first. Unfortunately, they aren’t thinking things through, and they’ll pass out before they can help their child, and then things end up badly for both parent and child. Airline crews always tell parents to put their own masks on first in order to try to counteract this tendency in parents.

Put simply, if you put on your mask first, both you and your child will survive. If you try to put on your child’s mask first, you’ll both pass out, and you may both end up with brain damage.

I believe the theory is that provided you (eg: parent of child) can function properly, you are then able to correctly place the mask over the child's nose and mouth and make sure your child is OK and does not take the mask off etc. If you are slightly fuzzy headed and not in total control, then you may make mistakes and put not only your life but the life of the child at risk.

You are aware that you’ll pass out before you die right? So if you get your child’s on then pass out, you die. Whereas if you get yours on and your child passes out, they’ll most likely be fine once you strap their mask on.

So you’d be sacrificing yourself for no reason, except not following simple instructions designed by people who did in fact put some thought into constructing them.

medical oxygen is obtained by electrolysis of distilled water…hence… its 100% pure oxygen.. whereas industrial oxygen is used from oxygen cylinders.. which can never have pure oxygen…it will have few gases mixed with oxygen..

Medical oxygen would have Carbondioxide too. Without CO2 in the air we breathe the respiration will stop. It's controlled by the hypothalamus.
