can you use a medical grade oxygen cylinder to air up tires?

can it be converted

Why don’t you drop off your car at a new car dealership or garage that has nitrogen which is a far better inert gas for tires than regular non-inert air? Nitrogen has molecules which are hundreds of times larger than oxygen therefore won’t leak past tire valves and beads as fast. It also is less heat resistant. Tires don’t gain as much pressure when hot or lose pressure when cold. Nitrogen will not support combustion as oxygen does. There’s no water in nitrogen which rusts and corrodes the inner wheels. It’s been found long ago that tires last longer with pure nitrogen inflation.

  1. Not straight off the shelf. Oxygen is very flammable and does not produce enough pressure with the valves that come on the cylinder. I guess if you can find the fittings and hoses to adapt, it could be made into one. It would more than likely cost more than it’s worth.

An air tank is only around $10.00. Just go get the real thing.

  3. Do you mean with medical grade Oxygen, then NO, Thet much oxygen in a tire will react with the rubber in the tire, and can cause a dangerous reaction.

  4. You probably could but the hardware alone would probably cost you the same amount as
an inexpensive Sears air tank or one from Harbor Freight.

Do you really want to lug that kind of weight around.

Tanks are cheap. I think the O2 would be overkill in my opinion.

  5. The cylinder itself could be converted – but you do not want to use pure oxygen. It’s extremely reactive and certainly an obvious hazard around anything that’s even remotely flammable.
