my friend who has anorexia has got swine flu and she said she is on oxgyen. she also said they have her on other machines and some tubes too. i just wondered what was going on?
No not necessarily. Sometimes for instance, somebody might go into hospital with chest pain. They will automatically have oxygen put on them. They might only just be having a panic attack. But it is just the standard procedure in that situation.
It depends why the person is in hospital in the first place. Why do you ask?
(Have just read your further comments)- Swine flu (much like the normal flu) can cause difficulty in breathing (because of all the muck your friend has in her lungs). The oxygen mask is being used to make sure she is getting enough oxygen. She probably also has a cannula (needle) in her arm to give her some fluids to keep her hydrated (IV therapy). She is also probably attached to a monitor for her heart beat, blood pressure and afew other things just to keep watch.
All normal standard things in that situation. Your friend will be okay.

not always. There are lots of circumstances where someone would wear an oxygen mask as a safety precaution. What are they in the hospital for?
