Civil war broke out in 1642 between the supporters of the King and the supports of the Parliament. The King was already heavily in debt from the wars he was waging and lost the civil war. He was beheaded. This is considered a turning point in the history of Britain. The monarchy was returned but with reduced powers. The main powers rested with the Parliament. This era also saw London suffer two great tragedies in the form of the Great Plague and the Great Fire. Two thirds of the city burnt down and was rebuilt with brick and stone to prevent future disasters.
